Many people may recognize Larry Berger as the energetic, often half-naked dude who hops on stage at Ani DiFranco shows to introduce the opening artists. Some might also know him in his more formal role as the long-standing sound system tech on the road. But few have yet to discover his tremendous wealth of musical talents, which he now displays on his self-titled release on Riverstone Records.
While most of the songs on this album could be classified as folk, Larry incorporates a colorful and diverse array of sounds into his compositions, which range from the playful, breezy, Jimmy Buffett-esque "Falling Rain" to the distorted modern rock of "Funny Now."
Fans of Lyle Lovett will appreciate the country foundation and rounded chord voicings of "One More Foggy Goodbye" and "Children of the Sun." Hints of the Grateful Dead's better acoustic work can be found in Larry's warmly unadorned vocal layering, crisp mandolin picking, clean guitar textures, and Appalachian-influenced song structures.
According to Berger, recording the album was a painstaking process, taking over three years to complete. He enlisted the technical help of his pal (and former LFS crewmate) Andrew Gilchrist, and the pair's dedication and perfectionist attention to production detail is obvious, as each song feels balanced and whole - never wanting more, never cluttered.
