Sara hails from a small town in the West Midlands of England. Her parents are both music teachers, so naturally music was an important part of her childhood. She played tympani and double bass in school and local orchestras as a teenager, until the day she discovered the power of electricity and the bass guitar.

After playing with a couple local bands, she moved to London and worked as a secretary at Polydor Records. It was here that she was discovered by the legendary Robert Fripp, who was encouraged to stay at a show to see "a girl who works in the office."

Sara went on to work with Robyn Hitchcock and Gang of Four in England, and later moved to the United States. In 1996 and 1997 she accompanied singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco on tours of Europe and North America, as documented on the double live album Living in Clip. She has played with many other known and respected artists in the music business, including the B-52's, the Indigo Girls, Joan Osborne, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Fiona Apple, and the Thompson Twins.

After taking a turn at vocals during an Indigo Girls soundcheck, Sara started toying with the idea of recording her own solo record. This idea became Make It Beautiful, Sara's solo debut, released on Righteous Babe Records in 2000.

The result is a joyous celebration of the groove: 10 tracks of pop-funk pleasure, in which Sara's dance-driven melodies are partnered with thoughtful lyrics by 5 acclaimed women songwriters—Ani, Emily Saliers (Indigo Girls), Barbara Gogan (The Passions), Kristen Hall, and Pal Shazar. Producer Peter Scherer (Ambitious Lovers) and guest artists Ivan Neville, Pee Wee Ellis, Cyro Baptista, BETTY and Andy Gill join forces with a stellar cast of players to bring Lee's music to life and (you guessed it) make it beautiful.
