Anyone who’s witnessed the raw energy of a Hamell on Trial show knows that live performance is where Ed is at his irrefutable best. Now you can experience the excitement in the comfort of your own home whenever you need a dose of his deliciously decadent stage show.
Based on his award-winning, one-man theatrical production “The Terrorism Of Everyday Life,” the DVD/CD combo mixes Ed Hamell’s music with comedy, politics and a keen social critique.
After years spent crossing the country on tour, Ed Hamell (performing as Hamell On Trial) emerges as the Kerouac of folk-punk, exposing both the heroism and decay of American culture with a sharp tongue and wicked sense of humor. The man machine-gun strums his way through songs that are as passionate as they are comedic, and offers up sets filled with refreshingly blatant political and social critique.
Over the course of 2007, Hamell began to develop live set into an hour-long, one-man theatrical production, titled “The Terrorism Of Everyday Life,” that mixed political music with stand-up comedy and social commentary told through stories from his life and travels. In August 2007, Hamell received a slew of outstanding reviews and a coveted Herald Award for the production at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland. Three Weeks raved, “The man may very well be a genius. Obscene, outrageous and brilliant.”
Now, recorded on a CD of the same title and captured on DVD as Rant & Roll, this deluxe edition proves that Ed Hamell has much more up his sleeve than an extra guitar pick. Both are fast-moving, often-hilarious celebrations of the day-to-day life of a journeyman musician, in which Hamell sets his sights on some classic subjects (sex, drugs, rock and roll) and some personal ones, too — his relationship with his father, and Hamell’s nearly fatal car crash. Rant & Roll mixes live footage from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and at Ani DiFranco’s Babeville in Buffalo, NY with on-the-spot interviews, tell-it-like-it-is road footage, DIY animation and Hamell’s own cartoons.
