ANI ON LLOYD MAINES:

"I recorded the song 'Sick of Me' down in Texas and I realized it had a kind of Texas vibe, the way it went to tape -- it's a country song [laughing], basically, which might contribute, too. And so I heard a steel guitar [while I was] hanging out in Austin and going to my favorite country bar; there's a whole sonic palate that exists down there that's different from the one in New York or New Orleans or my other favorite musical places. I just thought, 'What I need is a beautiful, lilting, pedal steel guitar on this tune.' So I asked my friend Mark who runs the Congress House, and he was like, 'Well, I should call Lloyd; he's fabulous, and he can play anything.' So I met him that day; he showed up at the studio and was really nice and wonderful."

ANI ON MACEO PARKER:

"Maceo reacts to the whole world by picking up his horn; he's an intensely musical person, as opposed to a verbal person. My friendship with Maceo is so resonant that way; I think that before we really even started to hang or become friends on the tour that we did together, there was an instant connection, not just of music, or of groove, but of energy -- the energy put into music -- which for both of us has a lot to do with joy, with renewal and feeding oneself through giving, and that kind of cycle. We have such a bond in that way, and I have such a, dare I say, 'reverence' for him. I saw some film of James Brown on stage in '65, and there's Maceo. Now it's 2001 and Maceo's still out there working his ass off and giving and giving, and still so 'new' in it. The newness that he brings to playing every day is so inspiring to me, and he runs his operation really similarly to mine, to us -- there's a real sense of love and community with him and his band and his manager, and there's just an endless dedication to what they do. So there's a real resonance with me and Maceo; my coming to know him has just been a thrill for me, and of course [it's been a thrill] to have him on a record, the new record, again."
