From the Archives, Old Hits Dressed Up for the Season
Ani DiFranco: Canon (Righteous Babe)
This double-CD greatest-hits collection includes a handful of rerecordings. After making a big splash in the 1990s Ani DiFranco settles into life as a cult favorite, supported by devoted fans. (As the record industry crubles, that self-sustaining model looks more attractive than ever, even though it may mean withdrawing, somewhat, from the broader culture.) Perhaps only a true devotee could love her raps, but her wordy, folky odes and protests seem more influential than ever. You can hear her influence, certainly, in the music of Tegan and Sara, and maybe also in a generation of emo bands that have figured out how to turn self-conscious confessions into pop songs.
