October 2007

This two-disc, 36-track career retrospective showcases memorable live and studio efforts earmarking Ani DiFranco’s evolution as a musician and political activist/observer, plus five re-recorded gems performed with drummer Allison Miller and bassist Todd Sickafoose. Much of DiFranco’s overwhelming musical influence and resonance stems from the intimate attachment and identification her work provides and provokes in listeners. Such attachment might prove to challenge the reception of re-recorded pillars “Both Hands” and “Shameless”, as both are bolstered by more polished and produced ensemble sounds, sacrificing presence and impact in the process. “Both Hands” is presented with fuzzily distorted too-pop-punk-for-comfort guitar instead of acoustic, with a faster pace and a bigger sound, effectively mitigating the heartstring tug of yore. Surely you cannot fault the impulse for reinvention, but you can never fault allegiance to the original.
