All of these photos were taken at the Mae Hla refugee camp where over 38,000, and possibly up to 75,000 people live as refugees. There are an estimated 135,000 refugees living in refugee camps along the Thailand/Burma border, and up to one million more refugees that are not permitted into the camps, according to US Campaign for Burma. Most are not permitted into camps because the Thai government fears that if it lets more people in it will create a "pull factor", causing hundreds of thousands more refugees to cross into Thailand. Unfortunately, it means that most Burmese, even if they are fleeing torture, slavery, mass-rapes, or ethnic cleansing have nowhere to seek safe refuge. They are subject to deportation back to Burma if caught by Thai authorities.

In the first photo (SA149) Ani is walking through the refugee camp on her way to an orphanage that we visited for more music exchange and a feast (even though the refugees have almost nothing, they shared with us their meager supplies). Again the children first sang to us and then Ani and Damien played some of their songs - some solo, some together. The children were amazing singers. The parents of many of these orphans that we met had been murdered by the Burmese army. In photo SA168, some of the orphans are showing Ani and Rebecca from USCB their church. The orphans escorted us everywhere we went, always holding onto our arms. SA171 was also taken in the church.
